The term palimpsest refers to a surface that has been written upon or inscribed several times, the previous text, texts or images having been imperfectly erased and remaining, therefore partly visible. This layering suggests our personal and collective history, our conditioning, hidden secrets, and hidden intentions.
Much like the surfaces of these paintings, the image we present to the world, that is, the way we would like to be perceived, is only a cracked and pitted facade, lumpy, unstable and fairly transparent....more than we realize or care to admit. As an artist I have been on a personal archaeological dig. The work has necessitated going beyond the shadows of my teachers, beyond form, appropriation, fashion, novelty, judgement, effort, improvement, and regret.
